Percentile (inclusive method)
A statistics problem from Statisticsdrill. Solve it with one answer box, with a fresh sample on every attempt and the worked steps and spreadsheet function in the answer, and it is checked the moment you submit.
The task
A training team scored 9 trainees on a skills check: 98, 75, 61, 52, 57, 39, 64, 78, 40. Find the 10th percentile using the inclusive method: sort the data, find the rank 1 + p(n - 1), and interpolate linearly between the two neighboring values. Round to 2 decimal places.
What this problem teaches
Other methods exist (PERCENTILE.EXC uses rank p(n + 1)), so always state which one a report uses.
A hint if you get stuck
Sort first. The rank 1 + p(n - 1) may fall between two positions; move that fraction of the way from the lower value to the next one.
